What changed when AI Mode reached the Indian search bar?
AI Mode is Google's chat-style search. Instead of ten blue links, it reads the web and writes an answer, citing a few sources inside it. It has been available in India through Search Labs since 2025, but the real shift came in 2026 when it moved into the Android search bar itself. That is the box hundreds of millions of Indians already type into every day, so this was less a launch and more a switch being flipped under everyone's feet.
Sitting above AI Mode is the AI Overview: the boxed answer that now appears on around 27% of Google queries in India. For a lot of everyday informational searches, the reader gets what they needed without scrolling to a single website. The link is still there. The reason to click it is not.
None of this shows up as a warning in your dashboards. There was no email, no ranking penalty, no red flag. The mechanism simply changed, and the first place most businesses notice it is the enquiry count.
- AI Mode moved from Search Labs into the Android search bar in India in 2026
- AI Overviews now appear on roughly 27% of Google queries in the country
- About 60% of searches now end with no click to any website
- Nothing about this appears as a penalty or alert in Search Console
Why can your rankings hold while your traffic falls?
This is the part that confuses people, and it is worth slowing down on. Ranking position measures where your link sits if someone scrolls to the links. Click-through rate measures whether they scroll at all. AI Mode and AI Overviews attack the second number, not the first.
When an AI Overview sits on top of a result, reported click-through rate on the organic listings below it drops by 34% to 61%. You can hold your number one spot and still lose more than half your clicks for that query, because the answer above your link already satisfied the searcher. Your rank is intact. Your traffic is not.
So the usual instinct, which is to pour more effort into ranking higher, misses the point. You are already ranking. The competition now is not the website in position two. It is the answer box in position zero.
Which Indian businesses are getting hit hardest?
The damage is not spread evenly. The categories losing the most clicks are the ones where the searcher wants a quick fact, a number, or a comparison, because that is exactly what an AI Overview is good at handing over. Finance, healthcare and education sit right in the blast radius.
Think about the queries these businesses used to win. "How much does a hearing aid cost," "which stream after tenth," "is this treatment safe." Those are answer-shaped questions, and Google now answers them directly. I see this with my own clients: a hearing-solutions provider like Prudent, or a college running admissions like GSS, lives on precisely the informational searches AI Overviews are eating first.
Local service businesses feel a different version of it. "Digital marketer in Pune," "best CA near me," "WordPress developer in Belgaum": AI Mode increasingly names a shortlist of businesses inside the answer. If you are on that shortlist, you win outsized attention. If you are not, you are invisible in a way a rank-11 listing never was, because there is no page two to be found on.
- Finance, healthcare and education: highest exposure, because their core queries are answer-shaped
- Any business built on how-to and cost queries: the exact searches AI answers first
- Local service providers: AI Mode now names a shortlist, and being off it is worse than ranking low
- E-commerce fares better on transactional queries, where people still want to see and buy the actual product
How do you see the AI Mode traffic Search Console is hiding?
Here is the frustrating part. Google Search Console does not separate AI Mode traffic from ordinary organic traffic. An AI Mode visit is logged as a plain organic visit, and impressions inside AI Overviews are folded into your normal numbers. You cannot open a report that says "this is what AI cost you." You have to infer it.
The clearest signal is a divergence: pull the last 6 to 9 months and put your average ranking position next to your organic clicks. If position is flat or improving while clicks are sliding, that gap is your AI exposure. Rankings holding plus clicks falling is the fingerprint.
Then go query by query. In Search Console, sort by impressions and look for high-impression, informational queries whose CTR has quietly collapsed. Those are the ones an AI Overview has almost certainly taken over. Cross-check by actually running that search on your phone and seeing whether an answer box now sits where your click used to come from.
- Compare average position against clicks over 6 to 9 months: a widening gap is your AI exposure
- Find high-impression informational queries whose click-through rate fell without a ranking drop
- Run those queries on a phone and check whether an AI Overview now sits above your listing
- Watch GA4 organic sessions against Search Console clicks for the same trend, since neither tags AI traffic separately
What do sites that get cited in AI Overviews do differently?
Being cited inside the answer is the new front page. Sites that get named in an AI Overview see reported clicks around 35% higher than uncited top-ten results, and that traffic converts far better, because the reader arrives already half-convinced by Google having quoted you. The click is worth more precisely because it is rarer.
The pages that get pulled into answers share a shape. They answer the question in the first two or three sentences, before any preamble. Their headings are the actual questions people ask, word for word. They contain one clean, quotable line with a real number in it. And they carry proper structure underneath, so a machine can lift the answer cleanly.
This is not a trick, and it is not separate from good writing. AI systems quote specific, sourced, confidently-stated facts. Vague, hedged, keyword-padded copy gives them nothing to lift. If you want to be the sentence Google reads out, you have to write the sentence Google can read out.
- Answer the query in the first two to three sentences, not after four paragraphs of throat-clearing
- Phrase headings as the exact questions people search
- Include one quotable, specific statement with a real number in it
- Add Article and FAQ structured data so the answer is easy to extract
- Cite named sources and first-party data: AI prefers specificity it can attribute
What should a business in India do this month?
Start by measuring, not panicking. Run the position-versus-clicks comparison above so you know whether this is actually your problem and how big it is. For a lot of transactional or local businesses, the hit is smaller than the headlines suggest. For an informational content site, it can be severe.
Then pick your defence. If your customers still need to see and choose a product, lean harder into the transactional queries and the channels AI does not sit between: paid search and social, your email and WhatsApp list, direct traffic. If your traffic was mostly informational, rebuild your best pages to be citable, so that even inside the AI answer, your name is the one being read.
The mistake I would avoid is treating this as a reason to spend more on ranking higher for queries that no longer produce a click. That is pouring water into a bucket with a new hole in the bottom. Fix which queries you chase and how your pages are built first, then scale.
- Measure your own exposure before reacting: position versus clicks over the last two quarters
- Shift effort toward transactional and local queries where clicks still happen
- Build up channels AI does not intercept: paid, email, WhatsApp, direct
- Rebuild your top informational pages to get cited inside the answer, not buried below it
