Freelancer or Agency in Pune? An Honest Cost Comparison

Freelancer or Agency in Pune? An Honest Cost Comparison

The comparison usually gets framed as cheap versus expensive, which is the least useful way to look at it. A freelancer and an agency in Pune are buying you different things, and the ₹20,000 a month gap between them matters far less than whether you picked the one that suits your problem. This is the honest version, written by a freelancer who will tell you when to hire the other option.

What each actually costs in Pune

Freelance paid media management in Pune generally runs ₹25,000 to ₹75,000 a month, depending on ad spend, how many platforms are live, and whether creative and landing pages are included. Agencies typically start around ₹40,000 and climb past ₹80,000 quickly once you add channels.

That gap is not margin. It is largely the account management layer: a person whose job is to talk to you, brief the person who does the work, and report back. Whether that layer is worth ₹20,000 a month depends entirely on how much of your time it saves and how complex your account is.

One thing to watch in both cases: whether the fee is flat or a percentage of your ad spend. A percentage arrangement means whoever runs your account earns more when you spend more, which is a direct conflict with your interest in spending efficiently. It is common at agencies and less common with freelancers.

What a freelancer is genuinely better at

Depth on a small number of channels. When one person runs the campaigns, builds the landing page and wires the tracking, those three things agree with each other by default rather than after three rounds of email.

The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly: a freelancer has no bench. If they are unavailable, nothing moves that week.

  • You brief the person who does the work, so nothing is lost in relay.
  • Faster changes, because there is no internal approval chain between a decision and a live campaign.
  • Usually lower cost for the same execution quality on one or two platforms.

What an agency is genuinely better at

Breadth and continuity. If you need SEO, paid social, paid search, content and a website maintained simultaneously, an agency has people for each and a freelancer does not.

Continuity matters more than most businesses expect. Staff turnover at an agency is their problem to absorb; with a freelancer it is yours. If your marketing cannot pause for two weeks, that is a genuine argument for an agency.

Agencies also tend to be better at process: documented handovers, scheduled reporting, and someone whose job is to chase things. If you have no internal marketing person, that structure has real value.

How to tell which one your business needs

The question is not what you can afford. It is what is currently broken.

If several things are half-done across many channels, you need breadth. If one channel is being run badly and everything else can wait, you need depth.

  • One or two channels, and the problem is execution quality: hire a freelancer.
  • Four or more channels running at once, or you need guaranteed coverage: hire an agency.
  • You have an internal marketer already and need a specialist for one platform: hire a freelancer.

Five questions to ask either one

Ask all five before you compare prices. The answers separate good suppliers from bad ones far more reliably than the monthly number does. My own answers, and how I work with Pune businesses, are on my digital marketing page for Pune.

  • Who owns the ad account, the Pixel and the GA4 property when we stop working together?
  • Is your fee flat, or a percentage of my ad spend?
  • Who specifically will be in my account day to day, and can I speak to them?
  • What happens in the first two weeks, before any budget is scaled?
  • Can I open the reporting myself, or do I receive screenshots?

Frequently asked questions

Is a freelance digital marketer cheaper than an agency in Pune?
Usually yes. Freelance management in Pune runs ₹25,000 to ₹75,000 a month against roughly ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 and up for an agency. But the gap is mostly the account management layer rather than execution quality, so the more useful question is whether you need that layer. If you have no internal marketing person to coordinate with, it may be worth paying for.
What is the biggest risk of hiring a freelancer?
No bench. If they are ill, travelling or overloaded, your account waits. A good freelancer manages this by capping how many clients they take and documenting campaigns in a shared file you can access, but the underlying risk does not disappear. If your marketing genuinely cannot pause for a week, an agency is the safer structure.
Do Pune agencies charge a percentage of ad spend?
Many do, typically 10 to 20 percent of monthly spend. It is worth understanding what that structure incentivises: the more you spend, the more they earn, regardless of whether the extra spend was profitable. A flat monthly fee removes that conflict, which is why I use one. Ask directly, because it is not always stated upfront in the proposal.
Can I start with a freelancer and move to an agency later?
Yes, and it is a sensible sequence for most growing businesses. The important thing is that you own the ad account, the Pixel and the GA4 property throughout, so the handover is a permissions change rather than a rebuild. If accounts are held in your supplier's name, switching means losing years of conversion history, which is a far bigger cost than the fee difference.
How do I compare quotes from a freelancer and an agency fairly?
Insist both separate ad spend from management fee in writing, then compare only the fees. After that, compare what the fee actually includes: is creative in scope, are landing pages in scope, is tracking setup in scope, and how often is reporting delivered. Two quotes that look ₹20,000 apart often are not, once you list what each covers.
