UTM Link Builder

Build a tagged URL that GA4 will attribute correctly. Fill the fields, copy the link, and use it wherever the campaign runs.

Your tagged URL—Copy this into the ad

UTM parameters are the only reliable way to tell GA4 where a visit came from when the platform itself cannot. Without them, traffic from a WhatsApp broadcast, an email newsletter or an Instagram bio link lands in direct or referral, and the channel that actually produced the sale gets no credit in your reporting.

Three rules prevent most of the mess I find in analytics accounts. Keep everything lowercase, because GA4 treats Meta and meta as different sources and will split one campaign into two rows. Use a consistent vocabulary: pick cpc or paid_social for medium and never mix them. And never add UTM parameters to internal links between pages of your own site, which restarts the session and destroys the original attribution.

For paid campaigns on Google Ads, auto-tagging with the gclid parameter is better than manual UTMs and should be left enabled; add UTMs only where auto-tagging does not exist. On Meta, use the URL parameters field at ad level rather than appending tags by hand, so every ad inherits the structure without typos. The utm_content field is where ad-level detail belongs, which lets you compare creatives inside GA4 rather than only inside the ad platform.

One caution worth stating: UTM data describes the last click, not the full journey. A customer who discovered you through a Meta video, searched your brand two weeks later and converted will be recorded as organic search. That is not an error in the tagging; it is the limit of last-click measurement, and it is why blended reporting across spend and revenue should govern budget decisions.

Frequently asked questions

What are the five UTM parameters?
utm_source names where the traffic comes from, such as meta or newsletter. utm_medium names the type of traffic, such as cpc or email. utm_campaign names the specific campaign. utm_term is used for paid keywords, and utm_content distinguishes individual ads or links within the same campaign. Source, medium and campaign are the three that matter most.
Do I need UTM tags on Google Ads?
No, if auto-tagging is switched on, which it is by default. Google appends a gclid parameter that GA4 reads directly and that carries more information than UTMs do. Adding manual UTMs on top can override auto-tagging and lose data, so leave Google Ads alone and use UTMs for the channels that have no equivalent.
Why does my UTM traffic show as direct in GA4?
Usually one of three reasons: the link was shared in an app that strips parameters, a redirect between the click and the landing page dropped the query string, or the parameters were added to an internal link and the session restarted. Test the tagged URL yourself and confirm the parameters survive to the final page.
